The challenge
Pulp and paper mills combine flammable process chemicals (Class I) with combustible wood dust (Class II), in a hot, wet, corrosive environment. Much of the equipment is custom — enclosures built and modified to a specific drawing for a production line — and needs to survive years of harsh service.

Pulp and paper is a double hazard in a punishing environment. Pulping and bleaching use flammable process chemicals (Class I); wood handling generates combustible dust (Class II); and it all runs hot, wet and corrosive. On top of that, much of the equipment is custom — enclosures built and modified to a specific line drawing.

Class, Division and Group must be confirmed with your AHJ and a qualified person (QPS) against the Canadian Electrical Code.
Common questions
- What makes a pulp & paper mill a hazardous location?
- Two things: flammable process chemicals used in pulping and bleaching (Class I) and combustible wood dust in handling areas (Class II). A qualified person classifies each area per CEC Section 18, and equipment is selected for the specific hazard and Group present.
- Can you build custom enclosures for a production line?
- Yes. A lot of mill work is custom — explosion-proof enclosures drilled, mounted and configured to a specific drawing. We build and modify to your spec, and can supply on a recurring basis for ongoing line needs.
